2012년4월. 5㎓ 무선 랜(Wi-Fi)을 개통한 KT에 이어 LG U+가 5월 중, SK텔레콤은 상반기 중 개통하기로 결정하면서 5㎓ 대역이 무선 랜의 황금주파수 대역으로 급속히 부상하고 있다. 최근 5㎓ 대역 무선 랜을 접속할 수 있는 노트북과 태블릿PC가 늘어나면서 통신업체들이 발 빠르게 5㎓ 무선 랜 구축에 나서고 있다. KT는 이미 이달부터 '프리미엄 와이파이'라는 이름으로 5㎓ 대역 무선 랜을 개통했다.

통신업체들은 일단 노트북이나 태블릿PC처럼 대용량 무선인터넷을 쓰는 단말기는 5㎓ 무선랜에 접속하고 스마트폰처럼 비교적 소용량으로 무선인터넷을 쓰는 단말기는 2.4㎓에 접속하도록 유도한다는 전략을 펴고 있다.

국내 무선 랜 장비 시장에 5㎓ 관련 기술 발전이 세계시장에 비해 한발 빨리 발전해 수출시장을 개척하는 데 도움이 될 것이라는 기대도 확산되고 있다. 무선 랜 장비업계 한 관계자는 "세계 무선 랜 장비 시장은 아직 2.4㎓에 집중돼 있고, 앞으로 1∼2년 뒤에 5㎓ 개발이 본격화될 것으로 예상된다. 국내에서 먼저 5㎓ 무선 랜 시장이 활성화되면 국내 업체들이 해외시장을 공략할 수 있는 교두보가 될 것."이라고 내다봤다.
